It Happened One Summer

Thank you Avon Books for this gifted copy.

If you are looks for a book that combines Schitt’s Creek and Deadliest Catch you need not look further!

Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father’s dive bar... in Washington.

Piper hasn’t even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won’t last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can’t do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She’s determined to show her stepfather—and the hot, grumpy local—that she’s more than a pretty face.

Except it’s a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there’s an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn’t want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan—and this town full of memories—may have already caught her heart.

Spoiler free Q&A review!

Other than the romance, what had this book reeling you in (pun intended)?

Y’all know I’m a big fan of stories that contain family dynamics, and I loved the strong bond between the sisters, Piper and Hannah. Both these women worked together and had each other’s back throughout the story.

I also loved how we learned that Piper wasn’t just some shallow airhead early in the story. Bailey wrote Piper as a women with insecurities just like the rest of us, and addressed the fact that not everyone knows what they want to do in life.

How about the male lead?

Brendan was an excellent and swoon worthy male love interest. He is one of those guys who is there for everybody and brings out the best in others.

My only gripe about Brendan is the fact that he calls Piper “baby” nonstop. I’m one of those women who wants to throat punch a guy when he calls me “baby,” so not liking that part of his character is completely on me.

👠 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲?

Lord have mercy someone get me a fan! This quickie opposites attract romance has steam...like all the steam. The bedroom dialogue and scenes even had me blushing at times (Brendan is quite the dirty talker).

Definitely 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

🦀𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲?

This story had a very steady pace that had me turning the pages quickly as I found myself enmeshed in the character’s lives. Not once did I feel bored or like this was just “another” romcom.

💄 𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤?

If you are looking for a steamy and fun romcom you have to pick this book up! I’m definitely picking up and looking forward to book 2 in this series coming out in 2022! So if you look for steam, angst, humor, and a small town love affair grab this book.
