Looking for Jane

Looking for Jane

Looking for Jane is a beyond moving historical fiction novel that puts an emotional face to the history of Canadian women’s reproductive rights. I was truly blown away by Marshall’s ability to brilliantly weave history and fiction together in order to tell an important story.

What appealed to you the most in this story?

This book as a whole completely blew me away! I still can’t believe it is a debut!

Looking for Jane is a historical fiction novel based on the real Jane Collective, an underground network of courageous women, including some doctors and nurses, who provided safe abortions in the late 60s, 70s and early 80s in Toronto, Canada.

The writing is beyond immersive and atmospheric. Everything that happens in this story feels steeped in reality, and you could tell Marshall did extensive research into maternity homes, abortion, and the psychological effect on mostly young girls.

How was the pace?

From the first chapter I was emotionally attached to all the characters and just wanted to jump into the story to help support them. The story holds a steady pace but reads quickly.

Do you recommend this book?

Yes!! I will forever remember and recommend this book to everyone. Saying that the story was engrossing and emotionally engaging is an understatement. This is a touchingly woven story with moving characters that also shows us the power and courage of love, motherhood, and the impossible choices women throughout history are often face with and how so many are left with no choices at all. I don't feel like my review has done this book justice so all I can say is, READ IT, no matter what.

Thank you, Atria Books, for this gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.
