The Frozen Lake
Code name Helené is one of my lifetime favorite books, so I was beyond thrilled to receive a copy of Lawhorn’s latest, The Frozen River. This is one of those books that is so amazing, no matter what I even attempt to write, I just won’t be able to do justice to the richness, depth, emotion and inspiration in the story as a whole.
What appealed to you the most in this story?
ALL the emotions! The emotional depth in this story is like nothing I have ever read before, and packs one heck of a punch. This is a brilliantly complex and tumultuous tale about possibilities, motherhood, midwifery, rape, justice, bravery and so much more. It captured my emotions in a death grip from the very beginning and held on to them till the very end. Actually, I’m still dealing with my book hangover.
I equally could not get enough of Martha’s character, especially because she was a real woman in history and this book is based on her journals. It was so hard not to skip to the Author’s Notes from the very beginning to learn even more about her real life, but I stayed strong. She was a historical bad ass, and I’m so thankful I learned about her life. Martha’s character leapt off the pages from the first few lines, and I found myself constantly relating to how she felt and the issues she faced with her own children even though we are centuries apart…I guess some things with motherhood never change.
How was the audiobook version?
I couldn’t put this story down, so when I had to set the book down, I immediately switched over to audio. Holy smokes! Jane Oppenheimer is a force as a narrator, and she sucked me in even further with her spectacular narration.

Yesterday
Yesterday was super cold with winds above 30 mph, so I had to hit the dreadmill. To make it a bit more bearable, I found a walking video on YouTube for NYC and enjoyed the sites during my walk.
I also started a new audiobook and I’m really hooked already!
Hanukkah has continued to be so wonderfully peaceful this year, and I have enjoyed lighting the candles each night.
