The Shadow House

The Shadow House

How have I not read one of Anna Downes’s thrillers till now!?! I feel completely cheated! The Shadow House is the perfect chilling tale that takes real world issues and then spins them into a psychological thriller that will have your heart inching its way into your throat.

Synopsis: A HOUSE WITH DEADLY SECRETS.

A MOTHER WHO'LL RISK EVERYTHING TO BRING THEM TO LIGHT.

Alex, a single mother-of-two, is determined to make a fresh start for her and her children. In an effort to escape her troubled past, she seeks refuge in a rural community. Pine Ridge is idyllic; the surrounding forests are beautiful and the locals welcoming. Mostly.

But Alex finds that she may have disturbed barely hidden secrets in her new home. As a chain of bizarre events is set off, events eerily familiar to those who have lived there for years, Alex realizes that she and her family might be in greater danger than ever before. And that the only way to protect them all is to confront the shadows lurking in Pine Ridge.

What appealed to you the most in this story?

The Shadow House had everything I look for in a thriller: mystery, suspense, breath holding creepiness, and a good twist.

The rules, though; I won’t forget those. Listen to me carefully, repeat after me: bones, doll, blood. That’s how it goes. Things arrive, and then…a magic trick. Here one minute, gone the next. No one knows where he went.

When this is what you read on the very first page of a story you get goosebumps! So, you know there was no way I was going to put this story down anytime soon. I started reading at bedtime (I love thrillers before bed) and needless to say, I was up till the AM hours rapidly turning the pages in this dark and quite unsettling story.

Was this a true thriller?

Oh boy was it ever! It’s that kind of thriller that has you asking questions and trusting no one. As you move back and forth between the two timelines, the story becomes darker and even more twisted as the sense of foreboding builds.

How was the pace?

Fast and at times steady.

Do you recommend this book?

If you love thrillers and/or a good mystery, you HAVE to grab this book! Be warned…You won’t want to put it down once you pick it up, so set aside some time and cut back on fluids so you won’t need bathroom breaks.
