HAPPY NEW YEAR!๐โจ๐ฅ
I hope everyone has a wonderful kick off to 2022! I canโt wait to see what this year has in store for us.
We are currently dealing with brutality cold temps (windchill of -50ยฐ), so Iโm baking up a storm. Yesterday was cranberry orange muffins, so of course itโs #pastryandcurrentlyreading time!
Iโm kicking off January with a carryover from December and a new book!
Iโm currently finishing up ๐ผ ๐๐ก๐๐๐ ๐๐ง ๐๐ฃ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐ฟ๐๐ง๐ with @mamas_top_shelf and @thrillofthepage after binging a lot of it while waiting to watch the ball drop. This is a story that grabbed me from the beginning and I canโt wait to see how it ends, since we each have different theories.
Iโm also starting๐๐๐ ๐๐ค๐ง๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ค๐ค๐ข this weekend. It looks like a very moving story that takes place during one of my favorite time periods to read about.
๐ฆ๐๐ป๐ผ๐ฝ๐๐ถ๐: In Prohibition-era New York City, Eunice Ritter, an indomitable ten-year-old girl, finds work in a sweat shopโan industrial laundryโafter impairing her older brother with a blow to the head in a sibling tussle. When the diminutive girl first enters the sorting room, she encounters a giant: Gussie, the largest human being she has ever seen.
Gussie, a powerful, hard-working woman, soon becomes Euniceโs mentor and sole friend as she finds herself entrapped in the laundryโs sorting room by the Great Depression, sentenced to bring her low wages home to her alcoholic parents as penance for her childhood mistake. Then, on her sixteenth birthday, Eunice becomes pregnant and her drunken father demands that the culprit marry his daughter, trapping her anewโthis time in a loveless marriage, along with a child she never wanted. Within a couple of years, Eunice makes a grave error and settles into a lonely life of drudgery that she views as her own doing. She spends decades in virtual solitude before her secret history is revealed to those from whom she has withheld her love.
