Seven Days in June
Seven Days in June, was quite the unexpected surprise. I was expecting a heavy and dramatic story, but what I found was a steamy, funny, and soulful story that was able to maintain a balance of levity while dealing with serious issues including chronic pain, parenting, and Black identity.
Synopsis: Brooklynite Eva Mercy is a single mom and bestselling erotica writer, who is feeling pressed from all sides. Shane Hall is a reclusive, enigmatic, award-winning literary author who, to everyone's surprise, shows up in New York.
When Shane and Eva meet unexpectedly at a literary event, sparks fly, raising not only their past buried traumas, but the eyebrows of New York's Black literati. What no one knows is that twenty years earlier, teenage Eva and Shane spent one crazy, torrid week madly in love. They may be pretending that everything is fine now, but they can't deny their chemistry-or the fact that they've been secretly writing to each other in their books ever since.
Over the next seven days in the middle of a steamy Brooklyn summer, Eva and Shane reconnect, but Eva's not sure how she can trust the man who broke her heart, and she needs to get him out of New York so that her life can return to normal. But before Shane disappears again, there are a few questions she needs answered. . .
Would this book make for a good group or buddy read?
YES!! I read this with my book club, and I just loved our discussion. This was actually a book where we all seemed to have different opinions throughout the story, and a lot of questions. All of which lead to some thought provoking discussions, and we all were still left with some unanswered questions too.
What appealed to you in this book?
The humor and romance appealed to me the most. The very first paragraph had me doubled over laughing, so I knew that this was going to be my kind of book.
I also loved how Williams portrayed a protagonist dealing with chronic pain (migraines). Williams herself deals with this condition, so her honest experiences in her own life translated clearly in Eva’s character.
How steamy was this story?
Oh it has the steam I love in a very wide-open door romance!
How was the pace?
Fast and steady.
Do you recommend this book?
Yes! This was the perfect blend of heavy realism and a sexy, humorous romance.
