The Resting Place

The Resting Place

The Resting Place is a creepy story that will keep you guessing right up till the end.

Synopsis: When Eleanor walked in on the scene of her capriciously cruel grandmother, Vivianne’s, murder, she came face to face with the killer—a maddening expression that means nothing to someone like her. With each passing day, her anxiety mounts. The dark feelings of having brushed by a killer, yet not know who could do this—or if they’d be back—overtakes both her dreams and her waking moments, thwarting her perception of reality.

Then a lawyer calls. Vivianne has left her a house—a looming estate tucked away in the Swedish woods. The place her grandfather died, suddenly. A place that has housed a dark past for over fifty years.

Eleanor. Her steadfast boyfriend, Sebastian. Her reckless aunt, Veronika. The lawyer. All will go to this house of secrets, looking for answers. But as they get closer to bringing the truth to light, they’ll wish they had never come to disturb what rests there.

What appealed to you the most in this story?

The setting and atmosphere in this book really made the story! Imagine having to endure a blizzard in the middle of nowhere, in an eerie mansion that hasn’t been lived in for decades, while a killer is lurking around. As I read, I felt just as trapped as the characters and desperate to get away.

Then, imagine that you have prosopagnosia (face blindness) and witnessed a killer walking away from murdering your own grandmother, but their face was just a blur. Is the killer the one lurking outside in the blizzard waiting to tie up loose ends? All of this made for a seriously intense story that kept me guessing and wondering what was real and what wasn’t.

Is this a thriller or mystery?

Both! Sten did a marvelous job weaving together nail-biting suspense with a mystery full of twists that keeps you guessing. I loved discussing theories and opinions about characters with Erin as we read this one together.

What were the characters like?

Without giving anything away, I will say that both timelines in this story have well developed characters that come together to create one dysfunctional family that helped build paranoia as the story progressed.

How was the pace?

This creepy story held a slow to steady pace. At times my attention did begin to wander, but the whole time I just had to know how everything would come together in the end.

Do you recommend this book?

If you love a good suspense story full of twists and turns that will have you questioning each character right up till the end, then this one is for you!
