Thank you Minotaur Books for this gifted copy.
Calling all mystery and police procedural lovers! Ann Cleevesโs latest, ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฆ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐บ, is out now!
Can this be read as a standalone?
This is book 3 in the Detective Matthew Venn series, but it can be easily read as a standalone, since there are excellent reintroductions for each of the characters.
What appealed to you the most in this story?
I can never get enough of the atmosphere in a Cleeves mystery. The way she can set the stage with tension and then add in storm after storm set in a small community, requiring Matthew and his team to stay, kept me turning the pages and holding my breath at times.
BuuutttโฆMy favorite part is always trying to solve the mystery as Iโm reading through all the twists and turnsโฆand man were there twists!
How was the pace?
This was a slow burn, but it did keep a steady pace.
Do you recommend this book?
If you are a fan of any kind of mystery, you definitely have to get this series a try!
P.S. I also highly recommend her books on audio they transport you straight into the story in a cinematic way. Not to mention they have helped me get through many a long road trip.

When Jem Roscoโsailor, adventurer, and legendโblows into town in the middle of an autumn gale, the residents of Greystone, Devon, are delighted to have a celebrity in their midst. But just as abruptly as he arrived, Rosco disappears again, and soon his lifeless body is discovered in a dinghy, anchored off Scully Cove, a place with legends of its own.
This is an uncomfortable case for Detective Inspector Matthew Venn. Greystone is a place he visited as a child, a community he parted ways with. Superstition and rumor mix with fact as another body is found, and Venn finds his judgment clouded.
As the winds howl, and Venn and his team investigate, he realizes that no one, including himself, is safe from Scully Coveโs storm of dark secrets.
