Lone Women

Lone Women

Ever pick up a book expecting one thing and then getting hit with something so unexpected that you can’t even put a name to what genre you are reading? This is what happened when I read Lone Women, and man am I glad this story was a complete 180 degrees from what I expected.

What appealed to you the most in this story?

I loved the female dynamics and relationships in this story. Each character definitely did not fit into any box as you read from their POV, and that is what made this story so real and the relationships between the characters dynamic yet completely plausible. Then, LaValle is able to bring the women, their relationships, and all the other supporting characters together along with a dramatic mystery in just a bit over 200 pages…I’m seriously blown away!

I also liked how the voice of each woman within the story was distinct and you can tell that some people aren't telling the truth to those around them. This had me changing my opinion of certain characters as I read and really got me thinking.

So, what genres does this story all encompass?

It really is amazing how LaValle was able to create a tense and atmospheric historical fiction story set during in a early 1900s Montana settlement and then layer in western folklore, horror, and mystery.

How was the pace?

I was really impressed with this incredibly fast-paced book

Do you recommend this book?

Overall, LaValle’s story was filled with strong female characters, action, and incredibly plotted situations that propel the plot forward while keeping the reader fully engrossed and entertained. This was my first time reading one of his books and it definitely won’t be my last! I’m already looking forward to reading his previous publication, The Changling, soon.

Thank you, Random House, for this gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.
